DESCRIPTION:THE WORK OF POLHEMUS SAVERY DASILVA ARCHITECTS BUILDERS\nNov
 ember 1\, 2008 – January 4\, 2009\n“Each house is a wish – a place of tr
anquility by the sea\, where memories are made with families and friends
  – a particular version of the endless summer.” - Michael J. Crosbie\,
Ph.D.\, AIA\, from the book\, Architecture of the Cape Cod Summer.	\nThe
work of Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders takes an individual
route through the combination of contemporary and traditional design\,
paired with impeccable construction. Widely acknowledged for their compe
lling architecture\, many buildings on Cape Cod\, Martha’s Vineyard\, an
d Nantucket were expertly designed and created by Polhemus Savery DaSilv
a Architects Builders—including the Cape Cod Museum of Art and the proje
cts included in this exhibit. \nThe principals of the firm\, Peter D. Po
 lhemus\, Leonard H. Savery (retired mid-2008)\, and John R. DaSilva\, al
l contribute unique perspectives and expertise.\nIn 1996\, Polhemus and
Savery established a design-build firm to achieve the construction and d
esign of well-designed\, Cape-inspired homes. Having exceeded well beyo
nd their original intentions\, the addition of DaSilva further pushed th
eir firm to develop a polished sense of design. Polhemus Savery DaSilva
Architects Builders’ ability to blend the artistry of architecture and d
esign with precise construction has earned the firm respect and recognit
ion. This exhibition explores the compelling art driven by the specific
demands of both the region\, and its clients\, combined with the firm’s
proficiency in design. Because they are so connected to the Cape\, the a
rchitects and designers follow an amalgamation of traditional Cape Cod a
rchitecture with modern themes. \nIncorporated in this exhibition is a
chronology of the firm’s major work—including its work on the Cape Cod M
useum of Art—and a close look at four houses (three completed and one cu
rrently under way). The design process is illustrated through initial s
ketches\, detailed plans\, and models created on the way to the completi
ng the homes. The work comes alive through drawings\, models\, small arc
hitectural elements\, and stunning color photographs by top architectura
l photographers including Brian Vanden Brink\, Peter Aaron/Esto\, and Ra
 ndall Perry.

DESCRIPTION:ARNOLD GEISSBUHLER: (1897 - 1993)Sculptor\, Shaped by the 20
th Century: Drawings & Sculptures from his Lifetime. \n“Coming from Euro
pe\, Geissbuhler was steeped in the traditional method of sculpting\, bu
t he emerged from that period to break rules and create abstract sculptu
re. In Geissbuhler’s body of work you can witness the movement from rea
lism to abstraction that occurred during that period of art history.”
 - Elizabeth Ives Hunter\, CCMA Executive Director.\nArnold Geissbuhler w
as an artist\, a teacher and a devoted family man to whom fame was unimp
ortant. This extensive exhibition of his work and discussion of his fas
cinating life will introduce him to many art historians\, and place him
in the fertile period of art history where traditional rules were broken
and new forms created.\nArtworks by Arnold Geissbuhler were the first p
ieces accepted into Cape Cod Museum of Art’s permanent collection. Harr
 y Holl\, Geissbuhler’s son-in law\, co-founded the museum in part to pre
serve Geissbuhler’s work here on Cape Cod and the family donated 39 piec
es in 1981. A Swiss-born sculptor\, Geissbuhler was trained academicall
y in Paris at the Academie Grande Chaumiere\, and throughout his career
moved away from Realism to Abstraction in his styles. After marrying El
izabeth Chase\, the two moved to the United States and settled in New Yo
rk and Cape Cod. Geissbuhler\, although extremely private\, was a major
figure in the Cape Cod art world. He produced an extensive body of wor
k including sculpture and drawings that spanned the entire 20th century.
His oeuvre reflects the changing attitude in how sculpture has become a
ccepted while his own individual style developed. The main themes and e
xpressions of his art include portrait sculpture\; family life\; war\; i
nfluence of Cubism\; Religion\; the W.P.A.\; impact of city life on cult
ure\; birds\; and\, female forms in large abstract and figurative creati
ons.\nThe selections in this show\, which are from CCMA’s permanent coll
ection\, as well as on loan from collectors\, trace the artist’s evolvin
g forms of expression influenced by the time in which he lived\, the cha
nging artistic movements and his personal response to them. This exhibit
ion highlights examples of his work: his early academic years\; his cha
nging styles during the 1930s while at Wellesley and in Provincetown\; h
is work during the Great Depression and WWII\; his family themes and his
  ceramic works.

ere not allowed to be destroyed by economic disaster. Produced under th
e WPA program\, one of his more famous oil paintings\, of the famed Clip
per ship\, The Red Jacket\, hangs as a centerpiece in the lobby of the B
arnstable Town Hall. His contributions to the WPA program were recogniz
ed through the inclusion of one of his paintings in an exhibition organi
zed by the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln\, MA honoring Massachusetts WPA a
rtists.\nIn 1935\, Coleman exhibited at the New York Society of Arts and
  Science\, and was awarded a prize in 1936. From 1937 – 1939\, Coleman
was scenic designer and technical director for the Mary Young Theatre in
Centerville\, MA. \nFrom 1944 to his retirement in the mid-1960s\, he
worked as a supervisor and teacher in the Barnstable School System\; ove
r a 22-year period\, he taught art to hundreds of students for which he
is fondly remembered. After retiring\, he taught adult education and pr
ivate classes. While living on Cape Cod\, he also continued designing s
ets for the Barnstable Comedy Club\, The Little Theatre in South Yarmout
 h\, and the Mary Young Theatre.\nColeman – an educator\, painter\, desig
ner\, illustrator\, cartoonist and commercial artist – is mainly recogni
zed for his marine scenes which are highlighted in this exhibition. His
works are displayed in the Barnstable Town Hall\, Cape Cod Hospital\, t
he Barnstable Public Schools\, the recreation building in Centerville\,
the Copley Theatre in Boston and many other public buildings\, restauran
ts and homes throughout the country.\nThroughout his life\, Coleman did
not actively promote himself as an artist\; while he did sell his work\,
he also gave away many paintings during his long career. He seemed mos
t satisfied with the creation of fine art.

This exhibit
ion highlights examples of his work: his early academic years\; his cha
nging styles during the 1930s while at Wellesley and in Provincetown\; h
is work during the Great Depression and WWII\; his family themes and his
  ceramic works.

 un."\n-from Tommy and the Wishing Stone	\nHarrison Cady\, illustrator\,
etcher\, painter and writer\, was born in 1877 in Gardner\, MA. From 19
11 to 1960\, he collaborated with Thorton W. Burgess\, illustrating the
author’s children’s books and nature stories. Cady is well-known for his
depictions of Burgess’ characters including Peter Rabbit\, Reddy Fox\,
Jimmy Skunk\, Grandfather Frog\, and Buster Bear. On his own\, Cady penn
ed Caleb Cottontail and Animal Alphabet and other children’s stories. \n
Both Cady and Burgess grew up in New England\, watching as farms gave wa

s imbued their work with zoological and botanical detail. Cady also huma
nized his illustrations\, drawing characters in coats and hats\, or carr
ying canes and umbrellas\, to appeal to their youthful audience. Cady wa
s also fond of sketching nature scenes in Rockport\, MA\, where he often
spent summers\, enjoying the rural feeling of the seaside town. Cady a
lso traveled throughout Georgia\, North and South Carolina\, Virginia\,
and West Virginia in search of picturesque scenery.\nCady contributed to
national magazines such as Life\, Good Housekeeping\, Saturday Evening
Post\, St. Nicholas\, and Ladies Home Journal. However he is most fondly
remembered for his contributions to childhood favorites such as Old Mot
her West Wind and The Adventures of Peter Cottontail.\nCady’s work was f
eatured at the New York World’s Fair in 1939\, and he exhibited landscap

hibited at CCMA. In 1970\, Cady died at age 93 in Rockport\, ME. He is
remembered not only for his beloved collection of stories with Thorton
 W. Burgess\, but also for his immense devotion to the exploration and pr

School of Art. After attending Corcoran\, he enrolled in the National R
adio School to become a licensed marine radio telegrapher\, believing th
at he needed a career other than art in order to make a living. \nColem
an\, in 1921\, worked in theatres in New York City. He married Ruby E.
Lepper\, with whom he had a son\, Vernon Ellsworth Coleman\, born in 192
 6. From 1921 to 1927\, Coleman worked as a freelance artist. \nRelocat
ing to Cape Cod with his family in 1921\, he became a founding member of
the Cape Cod Art Club (now Cape Cod Art Association)\, set up a studio
in Yarmouth Port where he instructed in addition to the Cape Cod Educati
onal Foundation. He was director of CCAA for several years. In 1927\,
he became assistant Stage Manager for the opening season of the Cape Pla
yhouse in Dennis.\nDuring the Depression\, he created over 100 murals un
der the Works Progress Administration\, a Federal government institution
to assist people who needed income as part of the New Deal. Some of th
ese murals still exist in public buildings throughout the town of Barnst
able today – a reminder of a time in our country’s history when dreams w
ere not allowed to be destroyed by economic disaster.

The work comes alive through drawings\, models\, small arc
hitectural elements\, and stunning color photographs by top architectura
l photographers including Brian Vanden Brink\, Peter Aaron/Esto\, and Ra
 ndall Perry.

This exhibit
ion highlights examples of his work: his early academic years\; his cha
nging styles during the 1930s while at Wellesley and in Provincetown\; h
is work during the Great Depression and WWII\; his family themes and his
  ceramic works.

dy from the collections of the Thornton W. Burgess Society\, through Nov
. 30. "One by one the others joined him\, another night of labor had beg
 un."\n-from Tommy and the Wishing Stone	\nHarrison Cady\, illustrator\,
etcher\, painter and writer\, was born in 1877 in Gardner\, MA. From 19
11 to 1960\, he collaborated with Thorton W.
Both Cady and Burgess grew up in New England\, watching as farms gave wa
y to urbanization. Hoping to expose children to nature\, Cady and Burges
s imbued their work with zoological and botanical detail.
However he is most fondly
remembered for his contributions to childhood favorites such as Old Mot
her West Wind and The Adventures of Peter Cottontail.\nCady’s work was f
eatured at the New York World’s Fair in 1939\, and he exhibited landscap
es at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1944\, 1945\, and 19
 46. \nCady’s love of nature is evident in his illustrations currently ex
hibited at CCMA. In 1970\, Cady died at age 93 in Rockport\, ME. He is
remembered not only for his beloved collection of stories with Thorton
 W. Burgess\, but also for his immense devotion to the exploration and pr
 eservation of nature. 508-385-4477

DESCRIPTION:VERNON H. COLEMAN\nSEASCAPES\, SHIPS & SCENERY\nOctober 18\,
  2008 – January 11\, 2009\nVernon Herbert Coleman (1898 – 1978)\, a note
d Cape Cod artist and art educator\, was born in Norwich\, CT where he g
rew up enjoying puppet shows that sparked his love of theatre. Especial
ly fascinated with theatre scenery\, he eventually designed theatre sets
\, which led to his lifelong interest in art. As a child\, he wrote sho
rt plays \, and attending theatre whenever possible as he grew older.
\n“Van” studied with M. Messer and Burtis Baker at the Corcoran Gallery S
chool of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, and Will Chandlee at the Washington
