The work of Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders takes an individual route through the combination of contemporary and traditional design, paired with impeccable construction. Widely acknowledged for their compelling architecture, many buildings on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket were expertly designed and created by Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders—including the Cape Cod Museum of Art and the projects included in this exhibit.
The principals of the firm, Peter D. Polhemus, Leonard H. Savery (retired mid-2008), and John R. DaSilva, all contribute unique perspectives and expertise.
In 1996, Polhemus and Savery established a design-build firm to achieve the construction and design of well-designed, Cape-inspired homes. Having exceeded well beyond their original intentions, the addition of DaSilva further pushed their firm to develop a polished sense of design. Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders’ ability to blend the artistry of architecture and design with precise construction has earned the firm respect and recognition. This exhibition explores the compelling art driven by the specific demands of both the region, and its clients, combined with the firm’s proficiency in design. Because they are so connected to the Cape, the architects and designers follow an amalgamation of traditional Cape Cod architecture with modern themes.
Incorporated in this exhibition is a chronology of the firm’s major work—including its work on the Cape Cod Museum of Art—and a close look at four houses (three completed and one currently under way). The design process is illustrated through initial sketches, detailed plans, and models created on the way to the completing the homes. The work comes alive through drawings, models, small architectural elements, and stunning color photographs by top architectural photographers including Brian Vanden Brink, Peter Aaron/Esto, and Randall Perry.

“Coming from Europe, Geissbuhler was steeped in the traditional method of sculpting, but he emerged from that period to break rules and create abstract sculpture. In Geissbuhler’s body of work you can witness the movement from realism to abstraction that occurred during that period of art history.” - Elizabeth Ives Hunter, CCMA Executive Director.
Arnold Geissbuhler was an artist, a teacher and a devoted family man to whom fame was unimportant. This extensive exhibition of his work and discussion of his fascinating life will introduce him to many art historians, and place him in the fertile period of art history where traditional rules were broken and new forms created.
Artworks by Arnold Geissbuhler were the first pieces accepted into Cape Cod Museum of Art’s permanent collection. Harry Holl, Geissbuhler’s son-in law, co-founded the museum in part to preserve Geissbuhler’s work here on Cape Cod and the family donated 39 pieces in 1981. A Swiss-born sculptor, Geissbuhler was trained academically in Paris at the Academie Grande Chaumiere, and throughout his career moved away from Realism to Abstraction in his styles. After marrying Elizabeth Chase, the two moved to the United States and settled in New York and Cape Cod. Geissbuhler, although extremely private, was a major figure in the Cape Cod art world. He produced an extensive body of work including sculpture and drawings that spanned the entire 20th century. His oeuvre reflects the changing attitude in how sculpture has become accepted while his own individual style developed. The main themes and expressions of his art include portrait sculpture; family life; war; influence of Cubism; Religion; the W.P.A.; impact of city life on culture; birds; and, female forms in large abstract and figurative creations.
The selections in this show, which are from CCMA’s permanent collection, as well as on loan from collectors, trace the artist’s evolving forms of expression influenced by the time in which he lived, the changing artistic movements and his personal response to them. This exhibition highlights examples of his work: his early academic years; his changing styles during the 1930s while at Wellesley and in Provincetown; his work during the Great Depression and WWII; his family themes and his ceramic works.

Vernon Herbert Coleman (1898 – 1978), a noted Cape Cod artist and art educator, was born in Norwich, CT where he grew up enjoying puppet shows that sparked his love of theatre. Especially fascinated with theatre scenery, he eventually designed theatre sets, which led to his lifelong interest in art. As a child, he wrote short plays , and attending theatre whenever possible as he grew older.
“Van” studied with M. Messer and Burtis Baker at the Corcoran Gallery School of Art in Washington, D.C., and Will Chandlee at the Washington School of Art. After attending Corcoran, he enrolled in the National Radio School to become a licensed marine radio telegrapher, believing that he needed a career other than art in order to make a living.
Coleman, in 1921, worked in theatres in New York City. He married Ruby E. Lepper, with whom he had a son, Vernon Ellsworth Coleman, born in 1926. From 1921 to 1927, Coleman worked as a freelance artist.
Relocating to Cape Cod with his family in 1921, he became a founding member of the Cape Cod Art Club (now Cape Cod Art Association), set up a studio in Yarmouth Port where he instructed in addition to the Cape Cod Educational Foundation. He was director of CCAA for several years. In 1927, he became assistant Stage Manager for the opening season of the Cape Playhouse in Dennis.
During the Depression, he created over 100 murals under the Works Progress Administration, a Federal government institution to assist people who needed income as part of the New Deal. Some of these murals still exist in public buildings throughout the town of Barnstable today – a reminder of a time in our country’s history when dreams were not allowed to be destroyed by economic disaster. Produced under the WPA program, one of his more famous oil paintings, of the famed Clipper ship, The Red Jacket, hangs as a centerpiece in the lobby of the Barnstable Town Hall. His contributions to the WPA program were recognized through the inclusion of one of his paintings in an exhibition organized by the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA honoring Massachusetts WPA artists.
In 1935, Coleman exhibited at the New York Society of Arts and Science, and was awarded a prize in 1936. From 1937 – 1939, Coleman was scenic designer and technical director for the Mary Young Theatre in Centerville, MA.
From 1944 to his retirement in the mid-1960s, he worked as a supervisor and teacher in the Barnstable School System; over a 22-year period, he taught art to hundreds of students for which he is fondly remembered. After retiring, he taught adult education and private classes. While living on Cape Cod, he also continued designing sets for the Barnstable Comedy Club, The Little Theatre in South Yarmouth, and the Mary Young Theatre.
Coleman – an educator, painter, designer, illustrator, cartoonist and commercial artist – is mainly recognized for his marine scenes which are highlighted in this exhibition. His works are displayed in the Barnstable Town Hall, Cape Cod Hospital, the Barnstable Public Schools, the recreation building in Centerville, the Copley Theatre in Boston and many other public buildings, restaurants and homes throughout the country.
Throughout his life, Coleman did not actively promote himself as an artist; while he did sell his work, he also gave away many paintings during his long career. He seemed most satisfied with the creation of fine art.

"Photographing the Art of Design" - a talk with Architectural Photographer Randall Perry will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2008 @ 2 pm.
This event is held in connection with the CCMA exhibition Architecture of the Cape Cod Summer which runs from November 1, 2008 through January 4, 2009 at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, located at the Cape Cod Center for the Arts in Dennis. The talk is free with museum admission.
Photographer Randall Perry has worked extensively for Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders and his work is included in the current CCMA exhibition, Architecture of the Cape Cod Summer.
Randall Perry has been providing high quality, award-winning photographic images to architects, builders and interior designers since 1986 through offices in upstate New York, Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Naples, Florida. Starting with a simple philosophy, “give a great product, at a fair price, on time and on budget,” has kept Randall Perry Photography busy and growing for over 22 years.
Educated at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and Randolph Technical Institute near High Point, North Carolina, Randall perfected his skill of lighting and composition working for two of the largest photographic studios in the country. Working directly with furniture manufacturers and the housing industry as a whole, Randall’s background with the High Point furniture market provided him with a strong background needed for his specialty in architectural photography.
Randall’s work has been reproduced in a variety of regional, national and international architectural publications –
as well as design books, editorial features, web sites, and advertisements.
His presentation will include work from his three varied geographic areas, as well as his steps in organizing and planning a professional photo shoot. Topics such as scouting the location, copyright issues, time of year, time of day, and before and after examples of his work will all be addressed.
