Novia Scotia Presents Boston With A Tree Plus The Garrett Mason Blues Band

Boston Common
165 Tremont St
Boston, MA 02111-1152
Thursday, 4 December 2008, 6pm

The Garrett Mason Band, including bluesmen Garrett Mason, Mike Farrington and Damien Moynihan will perform at the official City of Boston non-denominational Holiday Shrub Lighting.

For the 37th year, Nova Scotia is showing its gratitude to the people of the Greater Boston area for their help in the wake of the 1917 Halifax explosion by donating a tree. This tree lighting event has come to symbolize the significance of the cross border friendship between Nova Scotia and Massachusetts.

About Garrett Mason:
Garret was born and raised in Truro, Nova Scotia. His father is Canadian blues legend Dutch Mason. Dutch Mason stopped playing guitar before Garrett was born due to crippling arthritis in his hands. Nevertheless, he taught Garrett the structure of the Blues and influenced his sound. In 2005, Garrett’s talent was recognized when he received a Juno for Best Blues Album. Recently, Garret opened for five-time Grammy Award winner Buddy Guy at the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival in New Brunswick, Canada. Garrett has also performed at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee and the Blues Festival in Omaha, Nebraska.

The History of the Tree
91 years ago, a terrible tragedy forever linked the lives of the people of Boston and the citizens of Halifax, Nova Scotia. On December 6, 1917, a French freighter full of munitions and a Norwegian vessel collided in Halifax Harbor causing a nuclear-sized blast and a subsequent tidal wave that leveled the town and killed more than 1,700 people. The citizens of Boston were among the first to arrive in Halifax with a "rescue train" full of medical supplies, blankets and building materials. Much of the money for the aid came from donations made by ordinary citizens. Even Boston school children pooled their lunch money to help the victims of this huge disaster. The people of Nova Scotia have never forgotten the speed and generosity with which the residents of Boston responded. In appreciation, Nova Scotia sends a tree to Boston every year to express its thanks for the city’s compassionate response and to help spread the spirit of the season.

Event type: City Calendar Event
Phone: (617) 635-4505
Contact: Boston Parks and Recreation Department
Cost: Free and open to the public
Audience: Families
Neighborhood: Downtown
MBTA: Park Street Station
Type of Event: Concerts / Live Music, Holiday
More info: www.novascotialife.com…

Anthony Williams' URBAN NUTCRACKER

John Hancock Hall
180 Berkeley St
Boston, MA 02116-5014
Friday, 5 December 2008, 7:30 – 9:30pm

Urban Nutcracker presents a multicultural interpretation of the dance classic, performed by professional dancers and a cast reflective of the rich diversity & promise of Boston’s youth. Urban Nutcracker follows the story line of the 19th century fairy tale fusing ballet, swing, hip hop, flamenco and urban tap with the classical score of Tchaikovsky and the pulsating beat of Ellington.

By casting dancers from multi-ethnic backgrounds, Urban Nutcracker provides the audience with an invaluable opportunity to bridge cultural barriers. Designed to push beyond traditional interpretations and therefore beyond the traditional audience reach of the holiday classic, Urban Nutcracker will inspire a new generation of dance enthusiasts/theater patrons!

Event type: City Calendar Event
Phone: 617-524-3066
Contact: Dustin
Cost: $20-$55
Audience: Families, Visitors
Neighborhood: Downtown
MBTA: Green Line (Copley Square)
Type of Event: Arts (Performing)
More info: www.urbannutcracker.org

Cultural Survival’s 30th Annual Winter Bazaar Series

Hynes Convention Center
900 Boylston St
Boston, MA 02115-3101
Saturday, 6 December 2008, 10am – 6pm

This year is Cultural Survival’s 30th Annual Winter Bazaar Series. The Cultural Survival Bazaars are the biggest international craft & art fair in America. These are free-admission events offering attendees the unique opportunity to shop fairly traded items, handmade by indigenous peoples in Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

At the Cultural Survival Bazaars, every gift has a story to tell. Meet many of the artisans who make the crafts, learn about them, the craft-making process, and their cultural communities. The items available at the bazaars include jewelry, art, crafts, clothing, pottery, tribal wares, carvings, décor, and much more. Best of all, the proceeds support a variety of nonprofit work worldwide (www.cs.org) while supporting indigenous artisans and fair trade.

The Cultural Survival Bazaars are a great place to bring the family, meet friends, shop, eat a variety of ethnic foods, and enjoy the cultural atmosphere. The bazaars also offer free performances all day. This year the performances include those of the Ecuadorian band Yarina, the Tuvan throat singing group Alash Ensemble, traditional Northern Cheyenne and Mohawk storytelling by Leonard FourHawks, craft-making demonstrations, and much more. Check our website for the list of performers, schedule, and directions (www.cs.org) .

December 6th & 7th, 2008
Hynes Convention Center
900 Boylston St.
Boston, MA. 02115
10am to 6pm
*Parking Available at Hynes Auditorium Garage, 50 Dalton Street, Boston, MA

Event type: City Calendar Event
Phone: 6174415400
Contact: Dave Favreau or Jessica Pomare
Cost: FREE admission
Audience: Families, Adults
Neighborhood: Back Bay
MBTA: Central Square
Type of Event: Parades & Festivals
More info: www.cs.org

International Climate Day of Action

Faneuil Hall
4 S Market St
Boston, MA 02109-6201
Saturday, 6 December 2008, 12 – 1:30pm

For the last decade and more, America hasn’t exactly been leading the world to global warming solutions.

But that’s all about to change.

This December, world leaders will be meeting in Poland for the UN Climate Change Conference to decide the next steps on tackling global warming. It’s a perfect opportunity for President-elect Obama to send a clear message to the rest of the world that the U.S. is ready to be part of the solution. That’s why on December 6th, Greenpeace members will be joining people throughout the world for an International Day of Action for Climate Solutions. In the U.S., we’ll be holding rallies and taking photos at iconic locations in over 30 cities to send a message to the President-elect that the American people support strong action on global warming.

What better way to send that message than with a massive 20 by 30 foot postcard -- letting our world leaders know that here in Boston we’re ready for climate solutions! And they’ll know it’s from us because we’re posing in front of Quincy Market.

We’ll have a few speakers, and then we’ll take a massive group photo with our custom-made 20 by 30 ft. postcard-shaped banner, which will say “World Leaders: Americans are ready to save the climate. Love, Boston. P.S: Yes We Can!”

The very next day, our Greenpeace activists in Poland will deliver the photos of Boston’s rally to climate negotiators, sending the message loud and clear that Americans are ready for climate solutions.

To do it, we need you.

Show President-elect Obama and the rest of our leaders that we’re ready for America to lead the world on global warming and RSVP for the day of action in Boston today.

What: International Day of Action for Climate Solutions
When: Saturday, December 6th at 12:00 noon.
Where: Front Steps of Faneuil Hall (near the Quincy Market Building)

www.projecthotseat.org…

It’s time the world -- and our leadership -- knows that Americans are serious about climate change.

Event type: City Calendar Event
Phone: (302)299-2758
Contact: Joseph
Cost: Free
Audience: Children (Ages 0-5), Children (Ages 6-12), Teens (Ages 13-18), College Students, Families, Immigrants, Visitors, Businesses, Adults, Young Adults (Ages 20-34), Elderly
Neighborhood: Allston, Back Bay, Bay Village, Beacon Hill, Brighton, Charlestown, Chinatown / Leather District, Dorchester, Downtown, East Boston, Fenway-Kenmore, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Mission Hill, North End, Roslindale, Roxbury, South Boston, South End, West End, West Roxbury
MBTA: Government Station
Type of Event: Environmental Events, Parades & Festivals, Talks & Lectures, Volunteer Opportunity
More info: projecthotseat.org…
