Big Wishes for Little Wanderers Gift Drive

The Home for Little Wanderers, the nation's oldest child and family services agency and one of the largest in New England, is in need of gift donations during the 2008 holiday season. The Home's annual Big Wishes for Little Wanderers Gift Drive is a tradition for many New England families who stop by the Toy Room to donate a new, unwrapped gift or a gift card, help publicize the event, volunteer, or host a gift drive on our behalf. Donations collected through the gift drive will be delivered to thousands of children in programs run by The Home for Little Wanderers. In addition, The Home provides gifts to over 20 other child-serving agencies. Visit the Toy Room at 161 South Huntington Ave. in Jamaica Plain between November 26 and December 23, 2008. Additional information about the gift drive and sponsorship opportunities is available at www.thehome.org.

Meet the author: David Hackett Fischer - Champlain’s Dream

The Fort Ticonderoga Association and the FAB are pleased to welcome historian David Hackett Fischer to discuss and sign his new book, Champlain’s Dream.

David Hackett Fischer won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in History for his dazzling evocation of America during the Revolution in Washington’s Crossing. Now, in Champlain’s Dream, Fischer offers a vivid, groundbreaking account of the life of one of the most important and vibrant figures in American history, Samuel de Champlain, who founded Quebec exactly four centuries ago, and the most important leader in New France for more than 30 years.
David Hackett Fischer is University Professor and Warren Professor of History at Brandeis, a Harmsworth Professor at Oxford, and a Trustee of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, where he and his family spend much of their time. He graduated from Princeton and Johns Hopkins, taught at the University of Washington and Harvard, and he has won many prizes and awards for teaching, scholarship and literature. Among his books are Albion’s Seed, Bound Away, The Great Wave, Liberty and Freedom, Paul Revere’s Ride, and Washington’s Crossing, which won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 2005.

This event is presented in English. Followed by a book signing and reception. RSVP recommended. Please call 617-912-0400. Champlain’s Dream will be available for purchase at the FAB.

Novia Scotia Presents Boston With A Tree Plus The Garrett Mason Blues Band

The Garrett Mason Band, including bluesmen Garrett Mason, Mike Farrington and Damien Moynihan will perform at the official City of Boston non-denominational Holiday Shrub Lighting.

For the 37th year, Nova Scotia is showing its gratitude to the people of the Greater Boston area for their help in the wake of the 1917 Halifax explosion by donating a tree. This tree lighting event has come to symbolize the significance of the cross border friendship between Nova Scotia and Massachusetts.

About Garrett Mason:
Garret was born and raised in Truro, Nova Scotia. His father is Canadian blues legend Dutch Mason. Dutch Mason stopped playing guitar before Garrett was born due to crippling arthritis in his hands. Nevertheless, he taught Garrett the structure of the Blues and influenced his sound. In 2005, Garrett’s talent was recognized when he received a Juno for Best Blues Album. Recently, Garret opened for five-time Grammy Award winner Buddy Guy at the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival in New Brunswick, Canada. Garrett has also performed at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee and the Blues Festival in Omaha, Nebraska.

The History of the Tree
91 years ago, a terrible tragedy forever linked the lives of the people of Boston and the citizens of Halifax, Nova Scotia. On December 6, 1917, a French freighter full of munitions and a Norwegian vessel collided in Halifax Harbor causing a nuclear-sized blast and a subsequent tidal wave that leveled the town and killed more than 1,700 people. The citizens of Boston were among the first to arrive in Halifax with a "rescue train" full of medical supplies, blankets and building materials. Much of the money for the aid came from donations made by ordinary citizens. Even Boston school children pooled their lunch money to help the victims of this huge disaster. The people of Nova Scotia have never forgotten the speed and generosity with which the residents of Boston responded. In appreciation, Nova Scotia sends a tree to Boston every year to express its thanks for the city’s compassionate response and to help spread the spirit of the season.

Anthony Williams' URBAN NUTCRACKER

Urban Nutcracker presents a multicultural interpretation of the dance classic, performed by professional dancers and a cast reflective of the rich diversity & promise of Boston’s youth. Urban Nutcracker follows the story line of the 19th century fairy tale fusing ballet, swing, hip hop, flamenco and urban tap with the classical score of Tchaikovsky and the pulsating beat of Ellington.

By casting dancers from multi-ethnic backgrounds, Urban Nutcracker provides the audience with an invaluable opportunity to bridge cultural barriers. Designed to push beyond traditional interpretations and therefore beyond the traditional audience reach of the holiday classic, Urban Nutcracker will inspire a new generation of dance enthusiasts/theater patrons!

Gender Equity in Education

Come hear Susan McGee Bailey discuss the progress women and girls have made in education and the modern-day challenges we still face. The conference features a presentation by members of the Feminist Alliance, a high school feminist group created and run by students, and an overview of EMERGE, Mass. NOW's pilot-program for high school girls. Many Boston-area advocacy groups will be in attendance, and conferees will have the chance to visit their tables and find out more about each of their missions. In addition to the conference, there is a unique opportunity to view and learn about the National NOW archives. Housed at the Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe, the NOW archives chronicles the history and origins of NOW, and provides a first-hand look into early feminism!

Cultural Survival’s 30th Annual Winter Bazaar Series

This year is Cultural Survival’s 30th Annual Winter Bazaar Series. The Cultural Survival Bazaars are the biggest international craft & art fair in America. These are free-admission events offering attendees the unique opportunity to shop fairly traded items, handmade by indigenous peoples in Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

At the Cultural Survival Bazaars, every gift has a story to tell. Meet many of the artisans who make the crafts, learn about them, the craft-making process, and their cultural communities. The items available at the bazaars include jewelry, art, crafts, clothing, pottery, tribal wares, carvings, décor, and much more. Best of all, the proceeds support a variety of nonprofit work worldwide (www.cs.org) while supporting indigenous artisans and fair trade.

The Cultural Survival Bazaars are a great place to bring the family, meet friends, shop, eat a variety of ethnic foods, and enjoy the cultural atmosphere. The bazaars also offer free performances all day. This year the performances include those of the Ecuadorian band Yarina, the Tuvan throat singing group Alash Ensemble, traditional Northern Cheyenne and Mohawk storytelling by Leonard FourHawks, craft-making demonstrations, and much more. Check our website for the list of performers, schedule, and directions (www.cs.org) .

December 6th & 7th, 2008
Hynes Convention Center
900 Boylston St.
Boston, MA. 02115
10am to 6pm
*Parking Available at Hynes Auditorium Garage, 50 Dalton Street, Boston, MA
