The Argosy Christmas Ship™ festival is a holiday celebration that has been a Northwest tradition for 59 years. Its main purpose is to bring communities together to celebrate the holiday season. From our flotilla of ships to the crowds of people who gather onshore, this celebration is one of the gems of the holiday season.

Each night, from Saturday November 29 through December 23rd, the Argosy Christmas Ship™ sails to different Puget Sound waterfront communities, over 45 in total. Choirs onboard sing 20-minute performances to these communities, all broadcast via state-of-the-art speaker system. This year, we are beginning the program on Saturday night, November 29 to help commemorate the new South Lake Union Park. Both Saturday and Sunday will be value nights.

On shore, thousands of people gather around roaring bonfires anticipating the arrival of the Christmas Ship™. You can either join us on board the Christmas Ship™ or one of the Parade ships that follow, or join with friends and neighbors to gather together for your own caroling tradition. If you own your own boat, feel welcome to join in the festival and help form the largest holiday floating parade in the world.

In addition to good cheer, family, and friends, a portion of all ticket sales benefits The Seattle Times Fund For The Needy, an annual program that raises money for several charitable organizations in the Puget Sound area.

You can ride the Official Christmas Ship. This ship is called the Spirit of Seattle and has the choir on board that sings out to shore. It is the lead ship that all other boats follow. Rates to ride the Christmas Ship itself are:

$35 adults, $19 kids 5-12, free kids 4 and under. (Fuel surcharge fee and tax are additional on all events)

Pacific Northwest Ballet's Nutcracker dazzles Northwest audiences each holiday season. The production's brilliant blend of costumes, sets and choreography is unique to Seattle and creates a magical world enjoyed by children and adults alike. Choreographer Kent Stowell collaborated with acclaimed children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak to create Nutcracker in 1983. Each year, over 100,000 people come to McCaw Hall to see PNB's Nutcracker — one of the best holiday productions in the United States.

While creating the scenario for the production, Stowell and Sendak gathered inspiration from the original 1816 E.T.A. Hoffmann story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, as well as Marius Petipa's original scenario for the ballet, which was first performed in 1892. PNB's Nutcracker, set to the famous score by P.I. Tchaikovsky, whisks the audience away into Clara's enchanting dream world.

The entire company of professional dancers and more than 170 students from Pacific Northwest Ballet School will dance in 42 performances of Nutcracker during the 2008 holiday season. Audiences are sure to enjoy PNB's 27-foot mouse king, the splendid Christmas tree that grows from 14 to 28 feet tall, the land of snow, and all the magical characters in this special adaptation of a classic story.

Now in its 24th year, Providence O' Christmas Trees, a fundraiser for Providence Senior and Community Services, raised a record $930,000 in 2007 to help those in need through healthcare, housing and hospice. The goal this year is to raise $1 million.

Families are invited to attend the free "A Family Affair TreeView," sponsored by Barclay Dean. Enjoy live entertainment, craft projects for the kids and photos with Santa while strolling through a forest of innovatively decorated Christmas trees, with themes such as The Twelve Days of Christmas, Dr. Seuss, and The Night Before Christmas.

The Silver Bells Luncheon features live music by 1960s pop singer Merrilee Rush.

The O'Christmas Trees Gala Dinner & Auction will follow on the evening of Dec. 3. The trees will be auctioned to benefit seniors and hospice patients served by Providence Health & Services' Senior and Community Services.

In addition, at least 10 uniquely decorated Christmas trees will be on display throughout the downtown corridor as part of the O'Christmas Trees Tour of Trees Passport Contest. Holiday shoppers are encouraged to pick up a "passport" from the O'Christmas Trees website, www.providence.org/otrees, tour each tree location, and send in their completed passport for a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree at Pacific Place.

Proceeds from the event benefit residents and participants of Providence ElderPlace, Heritage House at the Market, Providence Hospice of Seattle, Providence Home Services, Providence Infusion and Pharmacy, Providence Supportive Housing, Providence Marianwood, and Providence Mount St. Vincent.

Internationally celebrated Seattle artist Anna Skibska is Providence O' Christmas Trees' 2008 Presenting Artist. She will use her signature glass sculpting technique in her donation to O'Christmas Trees. Her work of art will be arranged in the classic Christmas tree shape with sparkling rectangular green glass boxes.

'Naturopathic Medicine in the Context of Global Warming'

Hans Baer, PhD, combines his considerable knowledge of the history of holistic medicine and medical anthropology with information from his latest book, Global Warming and the Political Ecology of Health to discuss ‘Naturopathic Medicine in the Context of Global Warming.’

Dr. Baer is a Lecturer in both the School of Anthropology, Geography and Environmental Studies and the Centre for Health and Society at the University of Melbourne, as well as a post-doctoral fellow in the Medical Anthropology Program at Michigan State University. He is also associate editor for the history chapters of a textbook produced by the Foundations for Naturopathic Medicine Project and has authored 12 books, including Medical Anthropology and Toward and Integrative Medicine: Merging Alternative Therapies with Biomedicine. In 1994 Dr. Baer was awarded the Rudolf Virchow Prize by the Critical Anthropology of Health division of the Society for Medical Anthropology.

Victorian Carousel sponsored by Energy Exteriors is beautiful, old-fashioned carousel that offers frees rides daily. It is located under cover between the Pavilion and the Expo Hall.

Christmas Lights display: The Santa Tram takes patrons through a tunnel where elaborate light displays sparkle.

Winter Wine Garden: Toscanos Café and Wine Bar is proud to host the Winter Wine Garden. This holiday café is nestled in a winter-themed Victorian Village setting. Patrons can enjoy gourmet foods and some of the finest wines from around the world. Wine may be purchased by the glass or a bottle or case to take home for holiday gifts and special events. Patrons can enter a drawing to a win trip from Clipper Vacations at this location.

Old Cannery Train sponsored by Old Cannery Furniture: Free rides aboard the Old Cannery train provides fun for all ages.

Christmas Kitchen Demonstration Theater sponsored by TOP Foods: Al Lago Ristorante Italiano is hosting cooking demonstrations on how to make meals, deserts and more just in time for the holidays.

The Holiday House sponsored by Old Cannery Furniture is a new venue at VCC this year. Three rooms of exquisite furniture and décor provide a wealth of home decorating ideas. Design experts are on site to help with decorating deliminas. Patrons can buy a ticket for $1 for a chance to win all of the furniture and décor in the Holiday House. All proceeds from the raffle support the Children’s Therapy Unit at Multicare Good Samaritan Hospital.

A Victorian Country Christmas runs Dec. 3 -7 at the Western Washington Fairgrounds and Event Center, 110 Ninth Ave. S.W., in Puyallup (directions, www.thefair.com). Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday. Parking is free at designated Western Washington Fairgrounds parking lots.

General admission is $9.50 for adults; $8 for seniors 62 and over, military personnel with ID and juniors 6-17. Children 5 and younger are free with an adult.

Special group rates (15 or more) are available at $7.50 per person, plus two free tickets for the tour group leader and driver.
