Exploravision K-12 Science and Technology Awards Program

The Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Awards Program, one of the world's largest science and technology competitions for students in grades K-12, is now accepting entries for its 2009 competition. ExploraVision invites students to select a current technology and imagine what it might be like in 20 years. Up to $240,000 in savings bonds will be awarded this year to student winners whose innovative ideas combine imagination with the tools of science.

Susan Stewart (Crow), and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (Flathead
Salish/Shoshone/Cree). The exhibition will also accentuate the recently published book by The Nicolaysen Art Museum, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith's, She Paints The Horse, which is available in the MAM bookstore.

Tina Hoggatt and Jeffry Mitchell: Shiny, Happy, Pretty

This exhibition is a collaborative project that is inspired and anchored
by a recently completed artist book entitled What is the Panda to You?
by Tina Hoggatt and Jeffry Mitchell. This limited edition book will be
shown in the Shott Gallery accentuating the collaborative nature of
these two artists. The handmade edition of 20 includes letterpress,
silkscreen, woodcuts, flock and collage.
In addition to a collaborative multimedia installation, individual works
from each of these artists will be featured in the Silver Gallery.
Hoggatt and Mitchell bring very different skills to this exhibition, yet
the nature of this project reflects how each artist's expertise is
strengthened and complimented through collaboration. Hoggatt was last
featured in a group exhibition, Out of the Bullpen, at MAM in 2003.
Mitchell was a resident of the Archie Bray Foundation in 2005 and was
recently recognized and featured as a finalist for the Contemporary
Northwest Art Awards at the Portland Art Museum.

Handmade Felt Crafts from Kyrgyzstan

Special event sale of Paula Goldman's handmade felted crafts from Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. Paula employs women in Kyrgyzstan who make felted wool carpets, pillows, hats, slippers, handbags, saddle blankets, wall hangings, Christmas ornaments and stockings, belts and scarves. For centuries the tribal women have been making shirdaks, hand-felted carpets used to line the yurt for warmth and decoration. These carpets are made from morino sheep wool which they felt, color with dyes, cut in ornate patterns, stitch, and finally quilt into thick, luxurious, warm rugs. 15% of proceeds benefit the Missoula Food Bank. 11-5, Sat & Sun.

FVCC Offers Learning Adventure in Maui

Flathead Valley residents who want to escape the cold while experiencing authentic Hawaiian culture can join Flathead Valley Community College in a learning adventure on the island of Maui. As part of its cultural immersion program, FVCC is offering an 18-day learning adventure on an ancient registered archaeological site on the north shore of Maui December 29, 2008-January 15, 2009.

The cost to enroll in the program is $2,600 and includes roundtrip airfare from Spokane, camp-cooked meals, accommodations, all course activities and cultural presentations, island transportation and park and museum entrance fees. Additional expenses not included in the cost are class credits, transportation to and from Spokane, four personal days off, scuba certification fees and snorkeling and camping equipment.

The full balance is due to the college by December 1. Space is limited and will fill on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students must be at least 18 years of age to participate.

The series will conclude December 3 with “Archaeological Evidence for the Origins of Affluence,” by Dr. Michael Galaty, associate professor of anthropology at Millsaps College. In his presentation, Galaty will explain how archaeological origins of affluence can be traced to the Neolithic “New Stone" Age and how the transition to agriculture and settled village life may have been adaptations to changes in the environment and prehistoric social life. He will investigate and discuss the first paradox of affluence—why humans left millions of years of egalitarian social relations behind.
This lecture will be shown in AT 204 from 1:00-2:30 pm and in AT 203 from 7:00-8:30 pm.

The Sustainable Business Council is very excited to be bringing the Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour to Missoula. The largest environmental film festival in the United States, the Wild & Scenic tour compacts a 3 day event into 3 powerful, fascinating and exhilarating hours that will energize and inspire the community. The event is organized by Patagonia and hosted by the Sustainable Business Council with the help of The Trail Head, Kloli' Event Planning & Consulting and Trail 103.3. This is an opportunity for the SBC to give back to its members and show our appreciation publicly.

SBC member organizations Montana Water Trust, Sierra Club, Ecology Project International, Wilderness Watch, Wildlands CPR, Buffalo Field Campaign and WildWest Institute will be tabling at the event in order to high light their programs and the work that they are doing locally. The evening will begin with a beer and wine reception in the lobby of the newly remodeled historic Wilma Theater, followed by 3 hours of riveting documentaries, including Oil and Water Project by award winning Montana filmmaker Seth Warren, who will be on-hand to introduce his film. UM Students Redefine ‘Swan Lake’ Missoula-Style

Two University of Montana seniors have re-imagined the famous ballet, “Swan Lake,” as a contemporary dance production that draws attention to racism and homophobia in Missoula.
The senior project of Jessica Zacharias and Liz Martin, “Swan Lake” opens Wednesday, Dec. 3, with another performance on Thursday, Dec. 4. Both shows are at 7:30 p.m. at the Masquer Theatre in UM’s Performing Arts Radio/TV building. Tickets are available at the door and cost $7 for singles, $12 for couples, and $5 for students. YWCA Missoula is co-sponsoring the show.
“It is very different from the original Swan Lake,” said Martin. “There is a love story, a swan, and a ball, but that’s about it. We decided to really change it up because we believe dance should be used as a way to bring attention to current issues and problems.
Martin and Zacharias said they researched hate crimes in Missoula and the rest of the state, as well as the rise in white separatist activity in the Pacific Northwest as they developed the story line.
“It’s a growing problem that is not being adequately addressed,” said Zacharias.
The young women have been working since June on the production, which features a cast of 14 dancers.
“It’s less about the graduation requirement for us,” Martin said. “We certainly could have picked something easier, but it also wouldn’t have the potential to make as much of an impact.”

This festive, antique quilt collection is a selection of 16 works from
the Jim and Kate Carroll Collection. Viewers will enjoy a variety of
hand-quilted traditional and symmetrical patterns featuring stylized
flowers and figures, with a decidedly pastel palette. Many of these 19th
and early 20th century quilts are baby quilts. MAM recognizes and wishes to celebrate the influence of this historic craft and its connection to many contemporary expressions.
