SailNOW! is the signature CWB learn-to-sail program, offering adults a fi ve week, eight lesson basic sailing course in a variety of classic boats. Each course starts with a shore school, where sailing theory and terminology are explained. Subsequent lessons are hands-on and completely on-the-water. These 2-hour lessons are available Saturdays and Sundays at both 11:00 AM and 1:30 PM, with weekday lessons available at 6:00 PM May through August.

Upon registration, students choose available lesson dates and times that work for their personal schedule. The student/instructor ratio is 2:1. Registration includes student log book, supplemental textbook (The Complete Sailor, by David Seidman), and practice line for knot tying.

Sāādūūts, CWB's Artist-in-Residence, is a Master Haida carver. He has helped build over 5 canoes in the Seattle area. Currently a 37 foot log is in the early stages of being carved. Everyone is welcome to come help carve, meet Sāādūūts, and become part of the canoe family. Free.

Cast Off! - Free Public Sail

Our Cast Off! program allows visitors the chance to sail in classic boats.
The boats we use include: Admirable, a Bristol Bay Gillnetter, Amie, a Friendship sloop, Colleen Wagner, an Egret Sharpie, our long-boat Discovery, our New Haven Sharpie Betsy D, or a visiting classic.

Before and after your sail take a walk on the docks and discover the boats. Watch the volunteer crews rigging the boats. They’ll be happy to answer any question you might have, and you may even have a chance to help with the rigging!

We sail rain or shine, but wind conditions may keep us at the dock. Reservations are taken day-of-sail only at the CWB front desk. We do not accept phone reservations. This is a popular activity so please arrive early to reserve a spot on the boat.

“High Tech in a Small Boat”
Friday, November 21st at 7pm

Dennis Clark will give a talk and slideshow on the concept, construction, and sailing of his 18’ canting keel sloop. Clark will also discuss the history of the Northwest’s Clark Boat Company. Admission is free and refreshments are served. Join us on the third Friday of each month as a guest speaker discusses his or her special knowledge. Donations to cover costs are appreciated.

Holiday Spirit at Lake Union Park

Don’t miss this fantastic event hosted by the maritime organizations at Lake Union Park! The Center for Wooden Boats, Northwest Seaport, Discovery Modelers, and the Virginia V Foundation are all part of this collaborative event on the Lake Union waterfront. Activities will include children's holiday crafts, live music, refreshments, boat rides and much, much more. Stop by the Boathouse at CWB for hot cocoa, toy boat building, and maritime gifts. Visit the Steamer Virginia V for adult beverages and ornament making. Head over to the historic tugboat Arthur Foss for holiday cookies and cider. Stroll through the former Naval Reserve Building and make crafts with the Discovery Modelers. Take a walk on CWB’s docks and hop in a wooden boat for a scenic ride around Lake Union! A fun, FREE event for the whole family!

Tugboat Night

Cost: $20 per session
Ages: 14+
Join the crew and indulge your inner engineer aboard the historic tugboat Arthur Foss. Participants will perform engineer duties under the direction of the tug’s volunteer Chief Engineer, including inspecting plumbing and electrical systems, exercising machinery and powering up the tug’s Washington Iron Works diesel engine.
Limit: 20 students
