DESCRIPTION:<img src="http://www.museumofflight.org/FileUploads/RAeS_Log
o.jpg" align="right">With numerous international branches\, the Royal Ae
ronautical Society\, headquartered in London and founded in 1866\, is th
e oldest and one of the must prestigious aviation and aerospace organiza
tions in the world. The society has witnessed virtually all major event
s with lectures and papers from those that made them happen\, including
the Wright brothers.\n\nIn the last six years\, the Royal Aeronautical S
ociety – Seattle Branch has had the opportunity to host some extraordina
ry speakers. This year\, we are proud to present Dr. Ken Dial\, Directo
r of the University of Montana Flight Laboratory. Understanding the ori
gin and evolution of avian flight has been Dr. Dial's passion for the pa
st decade\, conducting experimental studies on developing birds as they
attain their locomotor skills has provided new insight into various aspe
cts of birds’ origins. Dr. Dial also studies animals of different wing
shape and body size using wind tunnels and free-flight to better underst
and the relationship between form and function among the 10\,000 species
of living birds. Using high-tech recording equipment (movie x-ray\, hi
gh-speed video\, and miniature biomechanical devices) we will literally
get an inside look as to how birds fly. Dr. Dial was trained in field b
iology as well as in vertebrate anatomy and physiology at both Arizona U
niversity and Harvard. He is also a pilot with instrument\, commercial
\, and multi-engine\, APT and jet aircraft certificates.\n\nThis event wi
ll be held at the Museum of Flight’s Great Gallery beginning at 6:00 pm
 \, Saturday\, 22 November 2008. Individual tickets are US$120. If you\,
or your company\, are interested in sponsoring a table\, the cost is US
$1500 and each table will seat eight guests.\n\nShould your company spon
sor a table this year\, please consider this: the RAeS-SB is in full sup
port of the advancement of Aviation High School and its students. We wo
uld ask that each table sponsor\, should they choose to do so\, in addit
ion to six of their company guests invite an Aviation High School studen
t and his/her parent/guardian to join them for the Joe Sutter Dinner Lec
ture. This\, of course\, is at the discretion of each respective table s
ponsor. Each AHS student attending will be selected by the president of
Aviation High School\, Dr. Reba Gilman.\n\nIf you would like to purchas
e tickets or sponsor tables to this year’s event\, please send your chec
k payable to the RAeS Seattle Branch at the following address no later t
 han November 14\, 2008:\nc/o Yvonne Aleson\nRAeS-Seattle Branch\n501 Kir
kland Avenue\, Suite 102\nKirkland\, WA 98033\n\nYou are invited to cont
act Yvonne at raes-sbsecretary@comcast.net if you have any questions. We
look forward to a delightful dinner and fascinating view of how dinosau
rs and birds have affected modern day aircraft flight. We hope you can
attend and we’ll be delighted to see you\, your partner\, and guests\, a
t the 2008 Seventh Annual Joe Sutter Dinner Lecture!
