7th Annual Joe Sutter Dinner Lecture: The Locomotion of Dinosaurs, Birds and Airplanes

The Museum of Flight
Saturday, November 22, 2008, 6 – 11pm

With numerous international branches, the Royal Aeronautical Society, headquartered in London and founded in 1866, is the oldest and one of the must prestigious aviation and aerospace organizations in the world. The society has witnessed virtually all major events with lectures and papers from those that made them happen, including the Wright brothers.

In the last six years, the Royal Aeronautical Society – Seattle Branch has had the opportunity to host some extraordinary speakers. This year, we are proud to present Dr. Ken Dial, Director of the University of Montana Flight Laboratory. Understanding the origin and evolution of avian flight has been Dr. Dial's passion for the past decade, conducting experimental studies on developing birds as they attain their locomotor skills has provided new insight into various aspects of birds’ origins. Dr. Dial also studies animals of different wing shape and body size using wind tunnels and free-flight to better understand the relationship between form and function among the 10,000 species of living birds. Using high-tech recording equipment (movie x-ray, high-speed video, and miniature biomechanical devices) we will literally get an inside look as to how birds fly. Dr. Dial was trained in field biology as well as in vertebrate anatomy and physiology at both Arizona University and Harvard. He is also a pilot with instrument, commercial, and multi-engine, APT and jet aircraft certificates.

This event will be held at the Museum of Flight’s Great Gallery beginning at 6:00 pm, Saturday, 22 November 2008. Individual tickets are US$120. If you, or your company, are interested in sponsoring a table, the cost is US$1500 and each table will seat eight guests.

Should your company sponsor a table this year, please consider this: the RAeS-SB is in full support of the advancement of Aviation High School and its students. We would ask that each table sponsor, should they choose to do so, in addition to six of their company guests invite an Aviation High School student and his/her parent/guardian to join them for the Joe Sutter Dinner Lecture. This, of course, is at the discretion of each respective table sponsor. Each AHS student attending will be selected by the president of Aviation High School, Dr. Reba Gilman.

If you would like to purchase tickets or sponsor tables to this year’s event, please send your check payable to the RAeS Seattle Branch at the following address no later than November 14, 2008:
c/o Yvonne Aleson
RAeS-Seattle Branch
501 Kirkland Avenue, Suite 102
Kirkland, WA 98033

You are invited to contact Yvonne at raes-sbsecretary@comcast.net if you have any questions. We look forward to a delightful dinner and fascinating view of how dinosaurs and birds have affected modern day aircraft flight. We hope you can attend and we’ll be delighted to see you, your partner, and guests, at the 2008 Seventh Annual Joe Sutter Dinner Lecture!
