Held each year on the Wednesday of National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week (November 17–21 in 2008), GIS Day is a global event that celebrates geographic information systems (GIS) technology, a relatively new computer-based technology which may be regarded as an “information visualization engine.”
GIS plays a role in nearly every decision we make. Choosing sites, targeting market segments, planning distribution networks, responding to emergencies, or redrawing boundaries – all of these problems involve questions of geography that GIS helps to easily solve.
Because this technology has the potential to help save time and money by manipulation and analyzation of large quantities of spatial data, it has found new use among diverse fields such as farming, gas, mining, transportation, natural resource and hazard management.
The applications of GIS technology are endless, limited only by the imagination of its users. From border patrol agents to doctors, and from federal agency employees to local city planners, people in nearly every profession all over the world are reaping the benefits of this extraordinary technology.
A presentation highlighting “What is GIS?” will be demonstrated. Hands-on workstations will be accessible and posters created by the members of the Fox Valley GIS Users Group that demonstrate various applications for GIS will be on display.
This year marks GIS Day’s tenth year, so be sure to join the celebration and become a part of this annual tradition.

HOPELINE Suicide Awareness Concert

In 1998, a suicide prevention hotline, HOPELINE was started. Since then, HOPELINE has answered over 3,00,000 calls. But in the past month, HOPELINE has been in danger of losing funds and its nationally known phone number 1-800-SUICIDE. Come join some of Green Bay's best local musicians for a night of hope, to raise awareness of this issue. But more importantly, to raise awareness of the prevalent issue of suicide, an problem that is all too often swept under the rug.

The concert is being held in the auditorium of Green Bay East High School. Tickets are $3 at the main building doors, but donations are welcomed and encouraged. All proceeds raised will be given to HOPELINE. We have a goal of $300. That's at least 100 people at $3 a ticket. So please, think about what this means to you, and what it means to those who will receive this benefit.

There’s a new turkey in town! Festival Foods has announced the launch of a new running event to take place on Thanksgiving Day in THREE northeastern Wisconsin Communities.

The events—to be called the Festival Foods Turkey Trots—will take place in Darboy at the Festival Foods on VanRooy St., the Ice Center in DePere and at the Oshkosh Festival Foods on Westowne Ave. at 8:30 AM on Thanksgiving Day. Each of the events will offer a chip timed 5 mile run as well as an untimed 2 mile walk. All participants will receive a free long sleeved t-shirt and Festival Foods Upper Crust pumpkin pie after crossing the finish line.

Proceeds from the Turkey Trots will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs and the YMCAs in each community where the events take place. According to Mark Skogen, president of Festival Foods, “the objective of the Festival Foods Turkey Trots is to get families active throughout the community and raise money for some very worthy charity organizations.”
