Theater BAYOU CITY CONCERT MUSICALS kicks off its 2008-2009 season with Rodgers and Hart’s Tony Award winning, blockbuster Broadway musical, PAL JOEY. The musical opens at the Heinen Theatre, 3517 Austin at Holman in Midtown on Thursday, September 4 and runs through Sunday, September 7 for five performances only. Performance times for the staged concert version are Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Friday at 8 p.m. Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Perhaps best known for the 1957 film version starring Frank Sinatra and Rita Hayworth, PAL JOEY was first a musical that opened on Broadway in 1940 starring Gene Kelly in his first major Broadway role. Though initially only a moderate hit on Broadway because of the dark storyline, PAL JOEY was revived in 1952 and was a critically acclaimed smash hit. The time was right for the story. Family/kids The Making A Mark® art exhibit, a partnership between The Periwinkle Foundation and Texas Children’s Cancer Center will be showcasing the artwork of patients and siblings at Texas Children’s Cancer Center. This year’s event features guest artists Régine Gaud and Gerard Visser of Lyon, France. Making A Mark® is a program that provides children who are touched by cancer and blood disorders with an outlet to express themselves through art and writing with the help of professional artists and writers. This break from the hospital routine gives the children a chance to explore their emotions, fears and concerns in an uplifting environment. By controlling the creative process and sharing their individual creativity, the children can begin to heal emotionally and cope with an illness over which they have little control.
