Doug Chadwick: Superorganisms in Einsteinian Space
Glacier Country
Doug’s definition of superorganisms is “colonies that act like a single creature through the remarkable communication systems within the group” – like ants and termites. His presentation will help us understand the resources and workings of a forest-canopied ecosystem by focusing on the small creatures and how much they support the life of an ecosystem. We all hear a great deal about the usual charismatic mega-fauna but seldom do we have a chance to learn about the “little guys” who do so much to support an ecosystem.
Douglas H. Chadwick is a wildlife biologist and the author of seven books on natural history, including The Grandest of Lives: Eye to Eye with Whales and the acclaimed The Fate of the Elephant, named by the New York Times Book Review as a Best Book of the Year. He has also written more than three hundred articles for such magazines as National Geographic, Audubon, and Sierra. In fact, Doug has an article on right whales in the upcoming October issue of National Geographic.
