Lead presenter Vicki Stroeher, professor of music history at Marshall, said that Berlioz’s symphony is essentially an instrumental drama and illustrates the importance of subjectivity in 19th -Century music. “Berlioz wrote his Symphonie Fantastique in what he called a ‘mental boil,’” Stroeher said. “He was obsessed with a woman who he thought unattainable, and so he wrote this symphony in an effort to impress her and win her over. Interestingly, it seemed to have worked.” The 2019-2020 MUsic Monday series is titled “The B List” and explores composers whose surnames begin with “B.” culminating in the Fall of 2020 with an all-Beethoven series to commemorate the 250th an… Building: Cellar Door, 905 3rd Ave. Event Type: Academic.
